When Google teamed up with NASA for Google mars, everyone loved the satellite images of the Martian surface. Now planet-based web cams are a real proposition thanks to a new technique that can send web data via laser. Scientist from MIT have made the first step towards broadband across interplanetary distances. It’s basically a light sensor that is exquisitely sensitive, lead researcher Karl Berggren tol.net “you can use it to detect single photons, the smallest possible particle of light. That’s useful in situations where there isn’t a lot of light available, when trying to communicate using light across extremely long distances.” Currently, radio frequencies are used by the big space agencies to transmit data back to earth, taking many hours; buy using a light sensor to detect tiny variations in light would speed up the process hugely.
The first step would be to develop a light detector with 57 percent efficiency at 1550 nanometer. This degree of accuracy would significant because that the wave length at which broadband signals travel over optical fibers. The 57 per cent figure is a huge jump from 20 per cent. The team says the find is the precursor to getting real time images from space.

“Members of the company’s top management are considering a deal despite Microsoft’s history of winning over major technology markets - think Web browsers - on its own, The Wall Street Journal said.
Microsoft has tried to compete in the burgeoning online search and Web advertising categories on its own but made little progress as Google has made massive gains as the industry leader, according to the story.
Microsoft executives hope that Yahoo’s strength in search and advertising categories would give the company a stronger foothold on the Web, the report said. So far, millions of dollars invested in search-engine technology and online ad systems have yielded little in the way of revenue or market share for the company, according to the Journal.”
This might come as welcoming news to some as Google currently has a huge monopoly on the search engine market, but to me that’s just exchanging one devil for another.

Yahoo and Aol wants to charge business to deliver email, but the anti-spam plan has caused a huge backlash. To date 37000 individuals have signed an electronic frontier foundation anti-tax petition and some 500 groups including charities, political groups and consumer organisations have expressed their indignation.
In and open letter to Aol, the petitioners claim that the plan wont do a thing to stop spam, and that its a slippery slope that’s bad news for every internet user. The bottom line is that charging an ‘email tax’ actually gives Aol a financial incentive to degrade email for non paying senders. The letter sates “don’t start a surcharge war that will complicate the internet0 with tiered services and dozens of middleman fees for every simple act of communication.” So far it seems the protest is falling on deaf ears.
